[edit]From Proto-Finnic *tup'as (compare Karelian tuvas, Ludian tubaz, Veps tupaz), possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *þūbaz (compare Icelandic þúfa, Swedish tuva) or from Indo-Iranian (see the Proto-Finnic entry for more).
