[edit]Etymology
[edit]tanú (“witness”) -ja (possessive suffix)
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]tanúja
- third-person singular single-possession possessive of tanú
- Tanúja voltam a tegnapi vitának. ― I witnessed yesterday’s discussion. (literally, “I was a witness of the…”)
- Tanúja volt annak, hogy a rendőrség könnygázt vetett be a tüntetők ellen. ― S/he witnessed the police using tear gas against the demonstrators.
Usage notes
[edit]It is commonly used followed by the appropriate form of van (“to be”) (omitted in the third-person present indicative as usual) to express to witness (to see or gain knowledge of through experience, literally “to be the witness of [an event or the fact that…]”), hence with -nak/-nek. When referring to multiple people, its plural form tanúi can be used.
