[edit]From Middle Low German strakes, strackes (“stretched, right away”), cognate with German stracks, Dutch straks (“later”). The Low German word was also borrowed to Norwegian straks,Swedish strax, Icelandic strax. The adverb is derived from the adjective Middle Low German strak (“straight”), German strack (“straight”), from Proto-West Germanic *strak.
