Etymology
[edit]Learned borrowing from Latin sēlēctiōnem (“selection”), from sēlēctus (“selected”), past participle of sēligō (“to select; to cull”).
The sense “national team” is from the idea that a national team is formed by a selection of a country’s best sportsmen.
