Uncertain. Compare Latin roseus. Probably from the verb rushunedz, itself from arushest (turn red, blush), from rosh. Other explanations derive it from a Vulgar Latin root *rosinus ("rose-colored"), *russionem or *rosionem. Compare Romanian rușine.
