[edit]Uncertain origin. Roberts assigns Proto-Indo-European *wert- in the sense of turning the mouth to smile; de Vaan finds no credible Indo-European origin and rejects connections to Sanskrit व्रीडते (vrīḍate, “to be shy, bashful”).
