From Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwr̥-, with -twr- developing into -dr-; compare the full form quattuor, ultimately from *kʷetwóres. Analogous to Ancient Greek τετρα- (tetra-) vs. τέτταρες (téttares, four).[1]
