[edit]From Malay pihak, from (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *piqak (“to split, separate sections”) or (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *pihak (“one side, one half”). Cognate with Javanese ꦥꦶꦲꦏ꧀, ꦥꦺꦲꦏ꧀ (pihak, péhak), Old Javanese pihakan (“one side, one half”), Tausug pihak (“tribe; clan”).
