From Malay pihak, from (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *piqak (to split, separate sections) or (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *pihak (one side, one half). Cognate with Javanese ꦥꦶꦲꦏ꧀, ꦥꦺꦲꦏ꧀ (pihak, péhak), Old Javanese pihakan (one side, one half), Tausug pihak (tribe; clan).
