op die fiets
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Literally, “on that bicycle”, modeled after op die manier (“in that manner, that way”), where manier (“manner, way”) is replaced with fiets (“bicycle”) (probably for humorous effect). The phrase originates from Rotterdam, but has since spread.
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ɔp ˈˈdi fits/ (idiom, contrastive stress on "die")
- IPA(key): /ɔp di ˈfits/ (neutral pronunciation used in most other cases)
Phrase
[edit]- Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see op, die, fiets.
- (colloquial, Netherlands) Affirms that the speaker has understood an explanation.

- 2008, Herman Franke, chapter 5, in Voorbij ik en waargebeurd #3: Zoek op Liefde:
- 'Wat bedoelt u?' vroeg ik. De neef keek me nietbegrijpend aan.
'U zei fraai is dat... dus...'
'Eh... o, op die fiets ... '- 'What do you mean?' I asked. The nephew gave me a puzzled look.
'You said "how nice"... so...'
'Eh... oh, now I get it ... '

- 2012, Steven James, De Toren #2, page 93:
- 'Eén kamer?' vroeg de man achter de balie. 'Ja.' Ik wierp een korte blik op Liènhua en fluisterde zo zacht dat alleen zij me kon horen: 'Om veiligheidsredenen.' 'Ah, op die fiets,' fluisterde ze terug.
- 'One room? asked the man behind the counter. 'Yes.' I briefly glanced at Liènhua and whispered softly, so that only she could hear me: 'For security reasons.' 'Ah, I see,' she whispered back.
- 2013, Lisette Jonkman, chapter 13, in Verkikkerd:
An error?' asks the lady behind the counter. Without waiting for an answer, she shouts to the back: 'Rory! There's an error again!'
'No', I quickly say. Quietly I continue: 'There is no error. I just have no money left on my account.'
'Oh, I see,' says the lady, upon which she - to my revulsion - turns around and bellows through the store: 'Rory! Nevermind, she just doesn't have enough money on her account!'
- 'An error?' asks the lady behind the counter. Without waiting for an answer, she shouts to the back: 'Rory! There's an error again!'
