Etymology

From French malacologie, contraction of malacozoologie, from the (obsolete) taxonomic name Malacozoa French -ologie (-ology), Malacozoa being in turn from Ancient Greek μαλακός (malakós, soft) ζῷον (zôion, animal).

Equivalent to malaco--logy.
