Etymology

From German Katoforite, that from Ancient Greek κατώφορος (katṓphoros, “having a downward tendency”), from κάτω (kátō, “downward”) and φέρω (phérō, “to bear, carry”), referring to the mineral's volcanic origin. The suffix -ite was already used for other minerals.

1. (mineralogy) A monoclinic-prismatic mineral containing aluminum, calcium, hydrogen, iron, magnesium, manganese, oxygen, potassium, silicon, sodium, and titanium.

   Sodium Amphibole. Aluminokatophorite Na2Ca(Fe^2,Mg)4 AlSi7 AlO22 (OH)2. Forms two series with Magnesio-aluminokatophorite and Ferrikatophorite.
