From Japanese 怪獣 (かいじゅう, kaijū), from Middle Chinese 怪 (kˠuɛi^H, “strange, fantastic”) ‎ 獸 (ɕɨu^H, “beast”) (compare Mandarin 怪獸／怪兽 (guàishòu)).
