huima
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *huima. Related to Estonian uim, Ingrian huima, Karelian huima and Votic huimõ. The Finnic word is probably originally a borrowing from either Old Norse svíma (“to faint, to swoon”) or Old Norse hvima (“to be confused”);[1] for sense, compare huimata. Alternatively, possibly akin to huikea (compare tuikea ~ tuima, julkea ~ julma), but in any case influenced by it in terms of meaning.
