From Proto-Finnic *haama (only found derived in Karelian hoamu, Veps aamo, and dialectal Finnish hahmo, haamo), probably from Proto-Finno-Permic *šamɜ. Other cognates include Erzya чама (čama, face), Moksha шама (šama, face).
