Vietnamese
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Proto-Vietic *huːɲ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟʔuuɲ ~ *ɟhuuɲ (Shorto). Compare Central and Southern Vietnamese hun, Proto-Katuic *huuɲ ~ *huoɲ (“to smell, to sniff”) (whence Kuy huːɲ ("to smell, to sniff") and Pacoh hunh (“to kiss”)), Kensiu ʔɔɲ ("to smell, to sniff, to kiss").
Insertion of initial *h in Vietic can also be seen in *tŋ-ʔaːm (“jaw”) (> Vietnamese hàm, Late Vietic), *heːt (“finished”) (> Vietnamese hết), *hanʔ (“he, she, it”) (> Vietnamese hắn), *haːr (“two”) (> Vietnamese hai), *hoːj (“foul-smelling”) (> Vietnamese hôi), *hɔːŋʔ (“river, brook”), *haːŋʔ (“to open (mouth)”).
