Etymology 1

[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *huːɲ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟʔuuɲ ~ *ɟhuuɲ (Shorto). Compare Central and Southern Vietnamese hun, Proto-Katuic *huuɲ ~ *huoɲ (to smell, to sniff) (whence Kuy huːɲ ("to smell, to sniff") and Pacoh hunh (to kiss)), Kensiu ʔɔɲ ("to smell, to sniff, to kiss").

Insertion of initial *h in Vietic can also be seen in *tŋ-ʔaːm (jaw) (> Vietnamese hàm, Late Vietic), *heːt (finished) (> Vietnamese hết), *hanʔ (he, she, it) (> Vietnamese hắn), *haːr (two) (> Vietnamese hai), *hoːj (foul-smelling) (> Vietnamese hôi), *hɔːŋʔ (river, brook), *haːŋʔ (to open (mouth)).
