[edit]From Hindi ग्वार (gvār), from Sanskrit गोपाली (gopālī, “kind of cucumber”), shortened from गोपालकर्कटी (gopālakarkaṭī, “cowherder's cucumber”), from गोपाल (gopāla, “cowherd”) कर्कटी (karkaṭī, “cucumber”) (see Latin cucumis and cucurbita).
