[edit]From Proto-Albanian *spleida, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)plei- (“to split, splice”). Compare Latin spolium (“stripped hide”), Lithuanian spaliai (“flax shives”), Ancient Greek ασπαλον (aspalon, “skin, hide”), σπολάς (spolás, “flayed skin”). Orel derives it from Vulgar Latin firigilīnum.[1] Gheg flî.[2]
