field coil (plural field coils)

1. (electrical engineering) An electromagnet, consisting of a coil of wire through which a current flows, used to generate a magnetic field in an electromagnetic machine, typically a rotating machine such as a motor or generator.

     The maximum permissible rises in temperature for both the main generators and the traction motors are 120° C. in the armature and 130° C. in the field coils, so that there is an ample margin of safety to meet abnormal conditions.
