1. (sometimes proscribed) A device that is inserted into the vagina or anus during sexual intercourse as a barrier contraceptive to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy.

Usage notes

• In newer LGBTQ contexts, female condom is often proscribed in favor of internal condom, which does not make the implicit assumptions about the user's gender that female condom does (as this type of device can also be used vaginally by trans men and anally by either cis or trans men).
