[edit]Inherited from Old Polish cietrzew, from Proto-Slavic *tȅtervь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *teterwás, from Proto-Indo-European *tetr̥-wó-s, from *teter- (“hen-like bird”). Cognate to Ancient Greek τέτραξ (tétrax), Latin turtur, Lithuanian tetervinas, Old Norse þiðurr and Sanskrit तित्तिर (tittirá).
