From Middle English churche-dore, chirche-dor, kurkdure, chyrchdurr, kirrkedure, from Old English ċiriċdor, ċyriċdor (church door), equivalent to churchdoor. Cognate with West Frisian tsjerkedoar (church door), Dutch kerkdeur (church door), German Kirchentür (church door), Danish kirkedør (church door), Icelandic kirkjudyr (church door).
