From Ligurian caróggio, from Vulgar Latin *quadruvium, for Classical Latin quadrivium (crossroads), from quattuor (four) via (road). Doublet of carrobbio and of learned borrowing quadrivio. Compare Corsican carrughju and Sicilian carruggiu.
