[edit]13th century. Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese camĩo, from Late Latin cammīnus; probably from Gaulish, although the earliest documentation of the word is from the 7th century, in Hispania.[1] From Proto-Celtic *kanxsman-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keng- (“to limp”). Cognate with Welsh camm, Irish céim, Celtiberian [Term?] (kamanom).[2] Compare Portuguese caminho.
