Noun
[edit]ateneum c
- athenaeum (an association for the advancement of learning) [since 1839][1]
- 1867 August 22, “Om aflidne Lektorn wid Hudikswalls högre Elememtarlärowerk innehåller Geflepoſten följande: [About the deceased Lecturer at the Hudiksvall Higher Elementary School, Gefle Posten contains the following:]”, in Norrbottens-Kuriren, page 2:
- Äfwen här, under ſin fååriga lärarewerkſamhet som lektor wid härwarande ateneum och ſin derjemte in nehafwande asſiſtentbefattning wid telegrafſtationen, förwärfwade han många wänner, ſom i honom lärde känna en rättſkaffens man, utan flärd.
- Also here, during his few years of teaching as a lecturer at the present athenaeum and simultaneously holding an assistant position at the telegraph station, he acquired many friends who came to know him as an upright man, without pretense.
- athenaeum (a reading association) [since 1845][1]
- athenaeum (a reading room or library) [since 1851][1]
- Synonyms: läsrum, tidningsrum
- 1874 December 21, “Bref från Lund [Letter from Lund]”, in Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfartstidning, page 5:
- Ateneum, som tillhandahåller ett rikt förråd af in- och utländska tidningar och tidskrifter (öfver 120 ex.), upptager 4 rum i föreningsbyggnadens södra flygels Östra torn, 2 rum i nedra och 2 i öfra våningen. I dessa senare, hvilka utgöra det egentliga Ateneum, äro samspråk och tobaksrökning förbjudna, hvilket icke är fallet med Atenei särafdelning på nedra botten, der tillika flere bräd- och schackspel äro att tillgå.
- The athenaeum, which provides a rich stock of domestic and foreign newspapers and magazines (over 120 copies), occupies 4 rooms in the eastern tower of the association building's southern wing, 2 rooms on the lower floor, and 2 on the upper floor. In these latter rooms, which constitute the actual athenaeum, conversation and tobacco smoking are prohibited, which is not the case with athenaeum's separate section on the ground floor, where several board and chess games are also available.
