[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ángis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éngʷʰis (“snake”). Cognate with Latvian odze, Old Prussian angis (“snake”), Russian уж (už, “grass snake”), Latin anguis (“snake, serpent, dragon”), Old Armenian աւձ (awj, “snake, serpent”).[1][2][3]
