[edit]From Armenian ամիրա (amira), from Old Armenian ամիրայ (amiray), from Classical Syriac ܐܡܝܪܐ (ʾămīrāʾ), from Arabic أَمِير (ʔamīr, “commander”). Doublet of amir, Amir, emir, and admiral.
