Etymology

From Middle High German strāfe, from Proto-West Germanic *strēpōn, of uncertain ultimate origin, but possibly related to *streupan (to squeeze, press, graze).[1] Compare Dutch straf, German Low German Straaf, Luxembourgish Strof.
