[edit]- (Noord-Brabant) First attested as steinberghe and stenberghe in 1267. Compound of steen (“stone”) and the dative plural form of berg (“hill, elevated place”). The element steen may have been added to distinguish the city from nearby Bergen op Zoom.
- (Noordenveld) First attested as van Steenberghen in 1531. Derived from a compound of steen (“stone”) and the dative singular form of berg (“hill, elevated place”). Named after a nearby dolmen. See also Dutch Low Saxon Steeinbargen.
