Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bestei, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰedʰh₂-é-ti. Cognate with Latvian best, Lithuanian bèsti, Old Prussian embaddusisi. Further related to Latin fodiō (“to pierce, to dig”), Hittite 𒁁𒁕𒀀𒄿 (“to dig”).
