Etymology 1

Unknown. Variously thought to be akin to louhia, louhikko, from lovi, or related to (possibly a borrowing of) Old Norse Laufey.

The surname is from place names with dialectal louhi (“rock, cave”) (akin to louhia, louhikko), referring to terrain. The surname may also be partly from Louhi (etymology 1) as a relatively recent surname adopted in the early 20th century as part of the Fennicization of surnames; one of the sources for new surnames were elements from national folklore.
