[edit]From Middle High German juncvrouwe, from Old High German juncvrouwa (“maiden; unmarried noblewoman”). Equivalent to jung Frau. Compare Danish jomfru, Dutch jonkvrouw (“maiden”), juffrouw (“unmarried young woman; female teacher, nanny”), Yiddish יונגפֿרױ (yungfroy).
