Etymology

[edit]

First attested as thuchterthe in 1207. Etymology unknown. One tentative etymology interprets the name as a derivation of groot (great, big) and a second compound noun formed from ducht (community) and herde (uncultivated land, heathland). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein Dochteren.
