[edit]1135, from Rhenish dialect Dusseldorp, from the river Düssel (from Proto-Germanic *þusila-, from Proto-Germanic *þausōną (“to surge, roar, flow”)) Dorf (“village”). The first element is related to *þusjaną, the root of tosen (“to roar, rage”), Icelandic þysja (“to rush”), Old English þys (“tempest, storm”), Old Norse þyssa (“uproar, tumult”).
