Possibly ultimately from the name of a Dacian tribe, the Carpi, see Wikipedia, and from Proto-Indo-European root *(s)ker-; see also Carpathians for more information. According to Eichner, possibly from Proto-Albanian *karpātai (mountanous place)[1]
