Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ἀττίλα (Attíla), of uncertain further origin. Usually derived from East Germanic: Gothic or Gepidic 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 (atta, father) -𐌹𐌻𐌰 (-ila), "little father". Related to Old English Ætla and Old Norse Atli. Possibly Gothicized Turkic *es (great, old), and *t il (sea, ocean), *attíl- (< *etsíl < *es tíl) with the meaning "the oceanic, universal ruler". Also Turkic *āt (horse), and *atli (horseman, cavalier).
