English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Basque Alzate, a surname. The meaning of Alzate is not clear. It is thought that Alzate is composed of haltz (“alder tree”) ate (“door, entrance, pass, gorge”). Some think that the second part, ate, could be a variation of eta (“and, a plurality”). So the meaning of the surname seems to be: [the house] at the entrance of the alder tree place, or [the house] in the gorge of the alder trees, or [the house] in the alder tree place.
Proper noun
[edit]Alzate (plural Alzates)
