Usage notes
[edit]- The second person singular pronouns are rarely used in public Korean. Using 당신 (dangsin) to a stranger is usually considered impolite; it is more commonly used between mature married couples. Instead, the person's title is often used, or 선생님 (seonsaengnim, “(respectable) teacher”) if the person's title is unknown, for strangers or superiors:
- 선생님, 안녕하세요?
- seonsaengnim, annyeonghaseyo?
- How are you, sir?/Hello, sir.
- 당신 (dangsin) is often given in translations from foreign languages in the sense "you" as the only option to avoid any ambiguity. Some dictionaries also use it as a placeholder (to be replaced with nothing or a more appropriate noun or pronoun), even if 당신 (dangsin) would not be used in many real-life situations.
