Etymology

Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋak (bird), and cognate with (OC *ŋaːɡ, “osprey”) (STEDT) and Burmese ငှက် (hngak, id) (Hill 2019). Said Sino-Tibetan root may be an areal word; compare Proto-Austronesian *manuk (bird, chicken).
