Etymology
[edit]Short for 啟迪教化/启迪教化 (qǐdí jiàohuà). The name was given by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty in 1763. The name of the city was reverted back to 烏魯木齊/乌鲁木齐 (Wūlǔmùqí) in 1954 in the People's Republic of China as 迪化 (Díhuà, literally “to enlighten and civilize”) was deemed condescending to the ethnic minorities in the region.
