Etymology

[edit]

First appears in the late Edo period in a text from 1770.[1] The clipped reading ほんと (honto) with the shorter second vowel is regarded as a simple shift from original reading ほんとう (hontō),[1][2][3] and this first appears in a text from 1886.[1]

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The form 本当 (hontō na) for the attributive is nonstandard and rare. 本当 (hontō no) is used instead. This usage pattern was already apparent by at least 1785.[1]

Inflection

Noun

[edit]

(ほん)(とう) or (ほん)() or 本当(ホント) (hontō or hontoほんたう (fontau)?

  1. [from 1770] truth, reality
    (ほん)(とう)()たくなかったのだ。
Hontō wa iitaku nakatta no da.
The truth is that I did not want to say it.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Colloquially, often pronounced — and even spelled, in hiragana — as ほんと (honto) with a short vowel, instead of ほんとう (hontō).
  • This is an example of a word that can be spelled with katakana to convey an informal conversational tone, as ホント.
