[edit]Derived from Pali maṇḍala (“circle; disk; ring; etc”), ultimately from Sanskrit मण्डल (maṇḍala, “idem”). Cognate with Lao ມົນທົນ (mon thon), Khün ᨾᩫ᩠ᨱᨵᩫ᩠ᩃ, Old Khmer mandala, Khmer មណ្ឌល (mŭəndŭəl).
