[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian برف (barf), from Middle Persian 𐭥𐭯𐭫 (ʿpl /wafr/), from Old Persian *𐎺𐎳𐎼 (*v-f-r /*vafraʰ/), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *wafrah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wapras. Cognate with Assamese বৰফ (boroph), Bhojpuri बरफ (baraph), Hindustani برف / बर्फ़ (barf), Gujarati બરફ (baraph), Marathi बर्फ (barpha), Nepali बरफ (baraph), Punjabi ਬਰਫ਼ (baraf), Sindhi بَرْفَ (barfa).
