Classical Mandaic

Etymology

[edit]

Derived from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mánas (mind), from Proto-Indo-European *ménos (mind), from *men- (to think). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬵 (manah), Old Persian 𐎶𐎴𐏃 (m-n-h /manah/), Latin mēns, Ancient Greek μένος (ménos), and English mind.

The Indo-Iranian origin of the word was originally proposed by Theodor Nöldeke.
