Etymology

    Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit स्वप्न (svapna), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swápnas, from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, from *swep- *-nós. First attested in c. 1564 as Middle Hindi سپنا (spna /⁠sapnā⁠/).[1] Doublet of خْوَاب (xvāb).

    Cognates include Latin somnus, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos), Old English swefn, and (English sweven).
