Inherited from common Maghrebi Arabic سقصى (saqṣa), also سقسى (saqsa). Apparently an alteration of Arabic اِسْتَقْصَى (istaqṣā, to investigate, fathom, inquire). In Moroccan Arabic, a new root س ق ص ي was derived from this. Compare Maltese saqsa, staqsa.
