[edit]Etymology
[edit]Slavic variant of infinitive marker ־ן (-n), most likely Belarusian -аваць (-avacʹ), Polish -ować, Russian -овать (-ovatʹ), -ывать (-yvatʹ), or Ukrainian -увати (-uvaty) ־ן (-n), with the final voiceless alveolar consonant replaced by ־ן (-n).
Pronunciation
[edit]Suffix
[edit]־עווען • (-even)
- The infinitive marker for verbs, often appended after Slavic or otherwise foreign words to form new verbs.
- Polish flirtować ־עווען (-even) → פֿלירטעווען (flirteven, “to flirt”)
Usage notes
[edit]- When borrowing a word with -ować or -овать (-ovatʹ), ־עווען (-even) usually directly takes their place in the word, with the root remaining unchanged.
