Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *krěščati (cf. Serbo-Croatian крије́штати) or *kręščati (Gerov), of onomatopoeic origin. By surface analysis, кря́сък (krjásǎk, “shout, cry”) ‎ -я (-ja).
