From копе́йный (kopéjnyj)-ка (-ka), in the combination "копе́йная деньга́" ("kopéjnaja denʹgá"), from копьё (kopʹjó, spear) (from the image of a rider with a spear on the coins minted by Moscow after the capture of Novgorod in 1478).
