Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *(h)méros; equivalent to μερ- (mer-), the root of μείρομαι (meíromai, to receive as one's portion)-ος (-os).[1] Compare μέλος (mélos, limb, member), of similar meaning and superficial pronunciation but different origin.
