Either Learned borrowing from Katharevousa ἀπέταλος (apétalos),[1] attested since 1873, from Koine Greek ἀπέτηλος (apétēlos) with change to πεταλ- from Ancient Greek πέταλον (pétalon) [2]
Or learned borrowing from French apétale < a- pétale from Ancient Greek πέταλον (pétalon),[3] Morphologically, α- (a-, alpha privative) Ancient Greek πέταλ(ον) (pétal(on)) suffix for adjectives -ος (-os).
Or, related to the unattested Ancient Greek ᾱ̓πέτᾰλος (āpétalos). [4]
